Women's Basketball Cruises Past Yellow Jackets

LAKELAND, FL - Anja Fuchs-Robetin scored a game-high 25 points as Florida Southern College women's basketball raced past Cedarville, 73-42, on Tuesday afternoon at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House. The No. 17 Moccasins (9-1) overcame a slow start on offense by limiting the Yellow Jackets (9-2) to single digits in both the first and fourth quarters to pick up their sixth-straight win.

Fuchs-Robetin ended the day as the only Moc to score in double-figures thanks to a 9-of-16 effort from the floor. Florida Southern played stifling defense all game, holding Cedarville to just 31.1 percent (14-of-45) from the floor. Tuesday's matchup was the final non-conference game of the year for the Moccasins, who will not play again until a Dec. 29 trip to Sunshine State Conference rival Nova Southeastern.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • 1st Quarter | Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first quarter as neither shot better than 33.3 percent, combining to go just 7-of-25 from the floor. The Moccasins, however, went 6-of-10 at the free-throw line while the Yellow Jackets went to the charity stripe just twice. The Mocs led by a score of 14-8 after one period.
  • 2nd Quarter | The Moccasin offense came alive in the second quarter, hitting 8-of-16 shots as they outscored Cedarville 22-16. Fuchs-Robetin had nine points in the second quarter alone, and Southern had a comfortable 36-24 lead at halftime.
  • 3rd Quarter | In the third quarter, the Mocs stayed hot on offense by connecting on 7-of-13 shots from the floor as they outscored the Jackets 20-13 in the third. Fuchs-Robetin was again the catalyst as she scored eight points in the quarter and the Mocs led 56-37 after three.
  • 4th Quarter | The fourth quarter was when Florida Southern out things completely out of reach by scoring 17 points to Cedarville's five and holding the Yellow Jackets to just 2-of-13 from the floor. The Moccasin defense forced 22 turnovers on the night, which lead to 29 points off turnovers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Tuesday's meeting was the first ever between Cedarville and Florida Southern. The victory by the Mocs put an end to the Jackets' nine-game winning streak. FSC head coach Betsy Harris tallied win number 94 at the helm of the Moccasin program. She is 94-36 in five seasons at Southern, 162-63 in her eight-year collegiate coaching career.
  • Camille Giardina pushed her career scoring total to 1,450. She needs 37 more to take over eighth place in the school record books. Fuchs-Robetin has now scored 1,202 points in her career and now ranks 14th in school history in scoring.

UP NEXT
