Giardina Records 1,500th Career Point, Mocs Dominate Lynn for Ninth-Straight Victory

LAKELAND, FL - Senior Camille Giardina became the eight Moccasin to record 1,500 career points as Florida Southern College women's basketball extended its winning streak to nine in a row with a 91-59 victory over Lynn University on Saturday night. The Mocs (12-1, 5-0 SSC) held the Fighting Knights (9-2, 3-2 SSC) to just seven points in the opening quarter.

Anja Fuchs-Robetin dropped 20-points for the fourth time in the last five games. Julia Jenike, Mackenzie Steele and Giardina all hit double-digits to help the Mocs stay perfect in Sunshine State Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • 1st Quarter | Lynn opened the scoring first but it was the Mocs who jumped out to a 6-2 lead, a lead the Fighting Knights would never come close to regaining. Elsa Landberg put the Mocs up 13-5 with her first points on the season on a three-point basket halfway through the first quarter. The Mocs used a 16-0 run just under the seven-minute mark to build its lead. Jenike led Florida Southern with nine points as Fuchs-Robetin and Giardina each added six points to give the Mocs a 20-point lead after the first ten minutes (27-7).
  • 2nd Quarter | Florida Southern extended its lead four of the five starters added 14 points and Chesney Campbell added on five points off the bench.
  • 3rd Quarter | The Mocs opened the second half on a 7-2 run. Fuchs-Robetin averaged a point per minute as she totaled eight points in the third quarter. Freshman Mackenzie Steele added on six points as she was 2-3 from long range. The Mocs saw its first 30-point lead off a three-point basket from Steele at 6:36. At the 3:23 mark of the third quarter Giardina recorded her 1,500th career point on a layup. Florida Southern ended the quarter with a 28-point advantage.
  • 4th Quarter | Florida Southern opened the final quarter on a 9-1 run as Marta Aranda, Bekki Kalaydjiev and Steele each drained a three from long range. Monet Burkett led the Mocs with seven points in the fourth and Steele followed with six points. Burkett hit a three with 53 seconds remaining to see the Mocs surpass the 90-point mark for just the fifth time this season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Florida Southern improved to 32-13 all-time against Lynn, including an 18-5 mark in the Jenkins Field House.
  • Moccasin head coach Betsy Harris picked up her 97th victory at the helm of the program and is now 97-36 in five seasons at Florida Southern. She is on pace to become the fourth coach in school history with at least 100 wins and is now 165-63 in her eight seasons as a collegiate head coach.
  • Giardina pushed her career scoring total to 1,500 to move into eighth place in school history in career scoring. She is seven points shy of moving into seventh place. Fuchs-Robetin moved closer to the top-10 in career scoring by moving her total to 1,265. She needs just 131 more points to move into the top 10.
  • The 12-1 start is the best through 13 games since the 2015-16 season, when the Mocs went 14-1 through their first 15 games on their way to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance.
