Women's Hoops Wins Fifth-Straight, Downs Rollins on Senior Night

LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College women's basketball sent its senior class out as winners with a 72-60 victory over Sunshine State Conference rival Rollins on Saturday night at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House. The No. 19 Moccasins (25-3, 18-2 SSC) got 20-point performances from seniors Anja Fuchs-Robetin (21) and Camille Giardina (22) to finish off the season sweep of the Tars (11-15, 8-12).

The Moc, who had previously clinched the No. 1 seed in next week's SSC Tournament, will face eighth-seeded Barry in the quarterfinal round at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Jenkins Field House. HOW IT HAPPENED

  • 1st Quarter | Florida Southern and Rollins traded jabs early on in the first quarter, with the Tars holding a 9-7 lead with 5:57 to go in the first. However, the Moccasins used a 7-0 run over the next four-plus minutes to grab a 14-9 lead on Mackenzie Steele's three with 1:16 left. Rollins was able to score the final five points of the period, including a three with four seconds left, to tie things at 14-14 after one-quarter of action.
  • 2nd Quarter | Southern was able to take complete control by reeling off 10-straight points to open the second quarter and take a 24-14 lead with 6:58 to go in the first half. The Mocs led by as many as 12 points (30-18) with 4:45 on the clock, but the Tars reeled off an 11-0 run to get within a single point (30-29) with two minutes to play. Fuchs-Robetin would score twice in the final two minutes and Julia Jenike added a bucket of her own to give the Moccasins a 36-32 lead at the half.
  • 3rd Quarter | The teams would go back and forth early in the third quarter before Florida Southern used a 12-2 run midway through the period to turn a 42-40 edge into a 54-42 lead on Bekki Kalaydjiev's layup with 1:30 remaining in the quarter to put the Mocs in total control as Southern led 57-44 after three.
  • 4th Quarter | Florida Southern was never in trouble in the fourth quarter as it led by as many as 19 (72-53) with 2:50 to go in the game. Moccasin head coach Betsy Harris would call a timeout with 42 seconds to go to allow her seniors to come off the floor to a standing ovation from the crowd.
  • Although neither team shot over 40.0 percent from the floor or better than 30.0 percent from three, the Mocs were incredible at the free-throw line where they hit 20-of-22 attempts as Fuchs-Robetin and Giardina combined to go 16-of-18.
