Cangero's 75 Leads Florida Southern in Round One of South Regional Preview

ELGIN, S.C. – Led by a 75 from Victoria Cangero, and a pair of 76's from Abbey Williams and Amanda Gartrell, Florida Southern was in fifth place after the first round of the South Regional Preview being hosted by Newberry College at The Members Club at Woodcreek.

In addition to the 75 and two 76's, the Moccasins also got a 79 from Tori Higgins and another 79 from Anna Millet. It's the third straight round in which all five golfers have been in 70's for Florida Southern. The Moccasins were the only team in the 12-team field to accomplish that on Monday.

With her three-over par 75, Cangero equaled her best round of the season, which featured 15 holes at even par and three bogeys. The 15 pars were the most for any golfer in the first round. She's been at 77 or better in six of her last seven rounds. Cangero ended the day in a tie for 10th place, which put her six strokes behind the leader, Paloma Vaccaro of West Florida.

Gartrell had a team and tournament-leading six birdies Monday on her way to a 76 and was two-under after 10 holes. A triple bogey on the par-5 No. 4 (her 13th hole played), however, dropped her to two-over before she finished with a birdie and a par on her final two holes. Williams' matching score of 76 included one birdie as she played the second half of the day at one-over. That allowed Gartrell and Williams to finish the round tied for 16th place.

Another golfer who had a strong second half was Millet, who matched Williams by going one-over for the final nine holes. That put Millet and Higgins in a tie for 31st place.

As a team the Moccasins' 306 put them 12 shots behind the co-leaders, Florida Tech and West Florida. The Panthers and Argonauts each had a 294 (+6), giving them a 4-shot lead over third-place Nova Southeastern and 5-shot advantage over fourth-place Rollins. Florida Tech and West Florida had the top five golfers in the tournament too, all of whom shot 72 or better, led by Vaccaro's 69 for the Argonauts. That gave them a share of the lead even after getting an 80 from their fourth counter. The Panthers got a 79 from their fourth counter, but also had a 71, 72, and 72.

The second round of the South Regional Preview begins Tuesday morning at 8:30.
