MELBOURNE, FL – Florida Southern's Shannon McKew has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Women's Golfer-of-the-Week for February 6 after leading the Moccasins to a third-place finish at the Barton College Invitational at Kiawah Island over the weekend. It was the first tournament of the spring semester for Florida Southern and the first player-of-the-week award handed out by the SSC this semester as well.
McKew had her first top-five finish of the season with a 2-round total of seven-over par 151. Her 75 on Saturday gave her a share of the individual lead before she shot a 76 on Sunday that allowed her to finish tied for third, three strokes behind the winning Sophie Bargeron of Armstrong State (GA). The 75 and 76 were McKew's two best rounds of the season after she had played in three of the Mocs' five tournaments during the fall.
Led by McKew's 151, Florida Southern placed third in the 17-team tournament that featured regional opponents from across Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas. The Moccasins had a team score of 630 overall, and their 307 in the second round was the second best score of the day behind only Armstrong State's 303. Armstrong won the tournament with a 618.
A fifth-year senior from Cockeysville, Maryland, McKew has now won two SSC Golfer-of-the-Week awards in her career. Her first came last April after she won the West Florida Argonaut Invitational in a playoff. By placing third in the Barton Invitational, McKew now has four top-five finishes in her career.
Florida Southern's next tournament will be February 20-21 when the Moccasins host the 19th annual Lady Moc Classic.
