LAKELAND - The Florida Southern women's tennis team took two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests to defeat visiting Alabama-Huntsville here Tuesday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The win is the Moccasins' fifth in a row and improves their record to 5-2 while the Chargers fall to 4-9.
Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik defeated Monika Polakovic and Cristina Cabanas, 8-1, at number three doubles as the Moccasins grabbed a quick 1-0 lead. Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci then topped Sarah Stearman and Aniek Remmerswaal, 9-8 (9-7), at number one doubles to put FSC ahead 2-0. UAH's number two duo of Marleen Gort and Naomi Esteve stoppped a Moccasin sweep with a 9-8 triumph over Linnea Skymberg and Natalija Popovic.
Lola Asis opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Marta Briega at number five while Rionda defeated Cabanas, 6-1, 6-0, at number two for a 4-2 Moccasin margin. Devrimci then sealed the win for Florida Southern with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Remmerswaal at number three.
Avery Hunter then beat Polakovic, 1-6, 6-1, 10-4, at number six singles while Popovic deafeted Stearman, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, at number four. Gort picked up Alabama-Huntsville's only singles win with a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 victory over Skymberg.
Florida Southern plays at home again on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
