LAKELAND - Sasha Nionova, ranked 32nd in the NCAA Division II, upset 7th-ranked Zuza Maciejerska, 6-0, 6-4, for Florida Southern's lone win as No. 3 Barry topped #25 Florida Southern by an 8-1 score here Sunday in Sunshine State Conference action at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
The loss, just the Moccasins second in their last 10 games, is their first in four SSC matches this season and drops the team's overall record to 8-4. Barry remains perfect of the year at 18-0 overall and 6-0 in the league.
The win by Nionova keeps her perfect on the season at 6-0 while Maciejerska suffers just her second defeat of the season against 11 wins. The match is just the fourth time she has been defeated in her 29 collegiate matches.
Barry swept the doubles play with the 18th-ranked duo of #18 Ana Paina and Sonja Larsen topping Mocasins Nionova/Selin Devrimci, which are ranked 10th in the South Region, by an 8-1 score at number one. Isa Rapisarda Calvo and Dasha Salnikova defeated Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik, 8-2, at number three. Maciejerska and Verena Schmid downed Linnew Skymberg and Natalija Popovic, 8-4, at number two.
In singles, Larsen, ranked 16th in the NCAA Division II, recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lola Ais at number five while Goia defeated Stepnik, 6-0, 6-3, at number six to clinch the win for Barry.
Third-ranked Rapisarda Calvo then defeated Devrimci, 6-2, 6-1, at number three with Nionova's upset win for the coming next. Sajnikova, ranked 18th, then wrapped up the Buccaneer win with a 6-4, 7-6 victory at number two over Skymberg.
Florida Southern play at home on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in a match recently added to the Moccasins' schedule.
