LAKELAND – Florida Southern swept doubles and took five of the six singles matches to record an 8-1 victory over visiting Palm Beach Atlantic here Saturday in Sunshine State Conference women's tennis action at the Warden Tennis Center. With the win, the 25th-ranked Moccasins improve to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the SSC while Palm Beach Atlantic falls to 11-11 and 2-6.
Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik got things off on the right foot for the Moccasins with an 8-0 blanking of Carolina Wakiyama and Dezi Bowman at number three while Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci, the 10th ranked doubles team in the South Region picked up an 8-4 win over Leoni Polzin and Taylor Conti at number one. Linnea Skymberg and Lola Asis completed the sweep by outlasting Romina Bolagay and Michaela Mignemi, 9-7, at number two.
Avery Hunter started singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win for the Moccasins at number six over Wakiyama while Skymberg topped Polzin, 6-1, 6-1 at number one.
Asis took a 7-5, 6-2 win at number four singles for Florida Southern, defeating Mignemi, while Romina Bolagay spoiled the Moccasins' shutout bid by posting a 6-4, 6-0 win over Natalajia Poppvic at number number three for Palm Beach Atlantic's only win.
Devrimci then downed Conti, 6-2, 7-5 at number two and Stepnik topped Florencia Roncatti, 7-6, 6-0 at number five.
Florida Southern wraps up the regular season with a home match on Wednesday at home versus Saint Leo at 3 p.m.
