Nionova Earns Second SSC Women's Tennis Player of the Week Honor

MELBOURNE, FL - Sasha Nionova has been named the Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis Player-of-the-Week as announced today by the league office. It is the second such honor for the junior.

In Florida Southern's sole match of the week, Nionova, ranked 32nd in the Division II, upset 23rd-ranked Marine Beugre-Guyot of Saint Leo University, by a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 score at number one singles. It was just third loss for Marine Beugre-Guyot this season.

Nionova is now a perfect 8-1 on the year, playing at #1 singles for the Moccasins. In doubles this season, she has teamed with Selin Devrimci for a No. 10 regional ranking with a 8-8 record at number one. For her two seasons at Florida Southern, Nionova sports a 13-3 singles mark.

A native of Riga, Latvia, Nionova came to Florida Southern last season as a sophomore after playing her freshman season at the University of Detroit Mercy, a NCAA Division I school in Detroit, Michigan, where she was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year.

Nionova earned her first SSC Player of the Week recognition on March 27 to become the first Florida Southern player to be so honored since Magda Riutort earned the recognition on March 15, 2015. Nionova also joins Riutort as the only two Florida Southern players to twice earn SSC Player of the Week honors in the same season. Ruitort earned her dual honors on March 18 and April 8, 2013.

The Moccasins, ranked 25th in the NCAA Division II, are the number three seed for the Sunshine State Conference Tournament which will be held April 20-22 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton. Florida Southern is paired with No. 6 Saint Leo in the quarterfinal round at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Semifinals are slated for Friday at 3:30 p.m. with the Championship and Third-Place matches being contested on Saturday, also at 3:30 p.m.
