BRADENTON - Florida Southern took two of three doubles matches from Saint Leo and then captured the first three singles matches as the #3 seeded Moccasins downed the sixth-seeded Lions, 5-1, to advance in the 2017 Sunshine State Conference Tournament played here Thursday at the IMG Academy.
The 25th ranked Moccasins will take on the second-ranked team in the NCAA Division II, Lynn University in the tournament semifinals Friday at 3:30 p.m. The tournament championship and third place matches will be held Saturday, also at 3:30 p.m.
In the other quarterfinal matches, top-seeded Barry downed 8th-seeded Florida Tech, 5-0, while #5 Rollins upset #4 Nova Southeastern, 5-3. In tournament action, the first team to win five matches takes the win with any singles matches still in play, stopped and not finished.
Saint Leo (10-6) picked up its only win as Kristyna Jurkova and Fabiola Cardenas defeated Lorena Rionda and Magda Stepnik, 8-4, at number three doubles. From there on, it was all Moccasins.
Selin Devrimci and Lola Asis sparked the Moccasin attach with an 8-4 win over Maja Pindelska and Katherine Zaatini at number two while Sasha Nionova and Linnea Skymberg topped Marine Beugre-Guyot and Madeleine Gauthier, 8-6, at number one.
In singles, Natalija Popovic downed Gauthier, 6-2, 0-6, 6-0, at number five and Asis took a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Zaatini at number five.
Nionova, ranked 32nd in the nation, then upset #23 Beugre-Guyot, for a second straight match. This time, Nionova, the reigning SSC Player of the Week, won by a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 score.
