LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College women's tennis picked up another big win over a ranked opponent on Friday as it topped No. 23 Florida Tech on Senior Day, 9-0, at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The No. 12 Moccasins (14-6, 7-3 SSC) won in straight sets in the No. 2 and No. 4 singles matches, but the Panthers (8-8, 1-7 SSC) forced third sets in each of the remaining singles contests in what turned out to be an exciting Sunshine State Conference matchup.
After Natalija Popovic easily won her match at the No. 4 spot (6-2, 7-6) and Lorena Rionda grabbed a win at No. 2 (6-3, 7-6), Sasha Nionova snagged a crucial victory at the No. 1 position in her first action in almost a month. Nionova, one of two seniors on this year's team, came from behind after dropping the first set to take a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory. Selin Devrimci also rallied from a first set loss for a win at the No. 3 spot (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) before Magda Stepnik won a three-set thriller at No. 5 (7-6, 6-7, 10-8) and Avery Hunter came through at No. 6 (7-5, 3-6, 11-9).
In doubles action, the No. 1 pairing of Nionova/Devrimci took an 8-6 win, while the No. 2 team of Stepnik and Nina Schwab also won by an 8-6 final. The No. 3 duo of Rionda/Popovic came away with an 8-5 win to complete the Moccasins' sweep of all three doubles matches.
Florida Southern will begin postseason action the Sunshine State Conference Tournament next week. The SSC Tournament takes place from April 19-21 at IMG Academy in Bradenton.
