Moccasins Drop Heartbreaker to Lions in Opening Round of South Region Tournament

MIAMI SHORES, FL - Florida Southern College women's tennis saw its 2019 season end on Monday morning, falling 4-2 to Saint Leo in the opening round of the South Region I Tournament on the campus of Barry. The No. 21 Moccasins (15-8) won the doubles point but could hold off a potent No. 4 Lions (20-6) singles rotation. The fourth-seeded Lions move on to challenge top-seeded Barry tomorrow at 10 a.m. for a berth to the Championship on the line.

The Moccasins end their season with a 15-8 record overall and a 6-4 record in conference play. Head coach Trish Riddell led her team through one of the toughest schedules in the nation, including seven matches against top-10 teams and five matches against top-five teams. The Mocs' 4-3 win over No. 2 West Florida on February 16 marked one of the biggest wins in school history and the highest-ranked opponent that Florida Southern College women's tennis has defeated in the history of the program. The 2019 season saw numerous milestones with Riddell earning her 200th career win and seniors Natalija Popovic and Lorena Rionda reaching 50 career wins in singles and doubles, respectively. Popovic finished the season with a 10-5 singles record while Rionda finished with a 13-6 record in singles and a 15-7 record in doubles.

Although the Moccasins lose four seniors after this year, the future looks bright. Freshman Minnie Kim had a spectacular start to her career at Florida Southern, posting an 11-6 record in singles play and a 13-7 record in doubles play. Junior Lola Asis led the team in singles flights with a 14-6 record. Fellow juniors Avery Hunter and Gabby Hesse produced in the lower flights for the Mocs, with Hunter going 5-2 in singles and Hesse posting a 9-5 record in doubles.
