Trio of Moccasins Earn All-America Honors

LEXINGTON, KY - Less than a week after earning all-region honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), three Florida Southern College volleyball student-athletes were named as all-Americans on Tuesday. Nicole Mattson (first team), Bethany Besancenez (third team), and Rachael Martin (honorable mention) added yet another award to their laundry list of accolades this season.

Mattson, who was the AVCA South Region Player of the Year, was named as a first team all-American for the second-straight year. Previously named as the South Region Player of the Year by the D2 Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) and the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, Mattson is just the second player in Moccasin history to be named as a first-team selection twice in her career (Kim Crawford - 1993 and 1994).

Mattson put together one of the best seasons in school history by tallying 554 kills (4.62 per set), 428 digs (3.57 per set), and 49 blocks. Her season total for kills ranks seventh in school history, while her kills per set is the third-best mark in the program record book. She was a two-time SSC Offensive Player of the Week during the year and also earned Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week accolades.

Besancenez earns third team all-America honors for the second year in a row. She finished the year with 1,335 assists (11.03/set) and became just the second player in school history with 5,000 career assists. She also earned AVCA all-South Region honors and was CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic all-District selection two weeks ago. Besancenez was a two-time SSC Setter of the Week this year.

Martin was previously named as a second team all-region selection by the D2CCA and a second team all-SSC honoree. She was an AVCA all-South Region selection and ended her sophomore campaign with 329 total kills (2.94/set) and 74 blocks (0.66/set). She was named as the SSC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1.

The trio helped the Moccasins to a 22-11 record this season, earning their ninth-straight NCAA Tournament selection. This year's all-America honors now gives Florida Southern a total of 51 AVCA all-Americans in its illustrious volleyball history.
