Wright Named MVP of Women's Cross Country Team

Allison Wright has been named Most Valuable Player for the Moccasin women's cross country team by Florida Southern Head Coach Ben Martucci.

Participating in six of the Mocs' seven meets this past Fall, Wright was named the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year and was also named to the All-SSC and SSC All-Championship Teams. The Sept. 19 SSC Runner of the Week, the freshman Sarasota, Fla. native, was selected to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team as well as the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Wright is the first Moccasin to be named the SSC Freshman of the Year since Kelsey Dunn was so honored in 2007, the first season the award was handed out by the league.

At the SSC Championship, Wright came across the finish line with a time of 22:03.86, which was a personal-best time by close to four minutes. She helped Florida Southern to a third-place finish - the highest finish for the Moccasins since the 2009 squad finished in second place.

Wright opened the season, taking 23rd place in the Pre-Conference in Melbourne with a 20:07.84 time in the 5K race. She then recorded her highest finish of the season. taking third place at the Moccasin Invitational at Lakeland's Holloway Park and Nature Preserve where she completed the sandy and hilly 5K race with a 20:32.70 time.

After taking a weekend off from competition, Wright posted her fastest 5K time (18:56.056) at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, AR on Oct. 1, recording the fastest 5K for a Moccasin runner since Kwambai in 2009.

At the NCAA South Region Championship at the Abbey Course in Saint Leo, Wright placed 34th with a time of 24:03.90 – her tenth fastest 6K time in program history. Behind Wright, the Moccasins took eighth place which is the best finish for Florida Southern since 2009.
