NEW ORLEANS – The Florida Southern women's cross country team opens the 2017 season ranked seventh in the preseason South Regional Poll as released Tuesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Moccasins finished in eighth place at the 2016 NCAA South Region Meet. The 2017 NCAA South Regional Championship will be held Nov. 4 at Lakeland's Holloway Park and Nature Preserve.
Saint is the preseason number one team followed by Lee, Montevallo, Union, and Tampa. Rounding out the top ten are Alabama-Huntsville, FSC, West Alabama, West Florida, and North Alabama.
The Sunshine State Conference is represented by Saint Leo, Tampa, and FSC, while the remaining seven teams all hail from the Gulf South Conference. The University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras, the defending South Region Champion, is not ranked.
Florida Southern opens the 2017 season by hosting the Holloway Park Preseason Festival, Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Holloway Park and Nature Preserve in Lakeland.
The USTFCCCA NCAA Division II region polls are released every week during the regular season. The poll ranks the Top 10 men's and women's cross country teams in each of the eight NCAA regions. Eight regional representatives coordinate the voting in their own region with input from the coaches.
