Sports Played or Coached: Men's Basketball Head Coach, 1977-82

Taking over as Moccasin head basketball coach in 1977, Dr. Hal Wissel wasted no time in establishing Florida Southern as a national power. From 1980-82, he guided the Moccasins to three straight trips to the NCAA Division II Final Four, a feat not matched at FSC since. In 1980, the Mocs placed third nationally, earning Dr. Wissel National Coach of the Year honors. The Mocs roared back in 1981 by winning the state of Florida's first collegiate title, taking the NCAA Division II National Championship. The next season just missed back-to-back titles, falling in the 1982 championship game. Among his many players was John Ebeling, an inaugural inductee in the FSC Sports Hall of Fame. Ebeling, a three-time All-America and 1982 NCAA National Player of the Year, finished his career as the Mocs' all-time scorer with over 2,500 points. Dr. Wissel's Mocs won four consecutive NCAA regional championships as well as four SSC Championships and compiled a five-year record of 105-49. A three-time SSC Coach of the Year, he was named to the SSC Hall of Fame in 1997. The author of two coaching textbooks, Dr. Wissel followed his career at FSC by moving on to UNC-Charlotte and then Springfield College. He left college coaching in 1990 with over 300 career wins to join the professional ranks.
