GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida Southern College's
Ludovico Viberti is crowned a 2022 NCAA National Champion after a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke Friday night at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Teammate
Matteo Zampese finished fifth in the same 100 breaststroke event.
"What an exciting day for the Mocs here in Greensboro," said head coach
Andy Robins. "Four individuals earned All-American honors tonight, capped by a National Championship for Ludo. Obviously it was great to see his hard work pay off. He and Matteo really push each other every day and it was exciting to see them represent the Mocs in that final."
The Torino, Italy native broke his own FSC school record set in the prelims this morning with a 52.35 time, shaving off 0.45 seconds from his earlier record. Viberti is the first Florida Southern College NCAA Individual National Champion since a 2019 championship for men's swimming All-American Matthew Holmes in the 400 IM. His title is the 27th individual national championship in FSC history.
So far in the NCAA Championships, Viberti has gathered two All-American honors and one Honorable Mention All-American. He was a member of the bronze-winning 400 medley relay team last night for his first All-American selection, with his win tonight earning his second. The Honorable Mention was selected after his 15
th place performance in the 200 IM in day one of NCAA competition.
The freshman has had a fantastic year as a Moccasin, named the SSC Swimmer of the Week in October on his way to an All-SSC First Team selection. He won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke at the SSC Championships and added a third-place finish in the 200 and 400 IM.
With one national championship under his belt, Viberti is not done with competition as he will compete in the 200 breaststroke tomorrow for a chance at another individual title.
