Eighteenth-ranked Tampa swept both games of Sunday's doubleheader at Henley Field, 15-9 and 7-6 in eight innings, ending the Sunshine State Conference title hopes for the 11th-ranked Moccasins.
The two losses dropped FSC's league record to 14-7 with three games remaining. Barry finished its league season Saturday at 18-6 and wins the SSC title. The Moccasins are 36-13 overall. Tampa finished its regular season at 38-15, 16-8 in the SSC.
Tampa's Mike Schwartz drove in eight runs with a pair of three-run homers and a two-run double in the Spartans' first-game victory. Both homers came off Moccasin starter Stephen Batman, who saw his record drop to 9-3. Nick Stanley and Wade Kirkland each homered for the Moccasins.
In the second game, the Moccasins were two outs away from a victory when Jared Simon hit a three-run homer off Dustin Merrell to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh. In the top of the eighth, Jesus Barroso put Tampa in front with a one-out solo homer that was just his second of the season. Josh Bowman, who had entered the game in the fifth, retired the Moccasins in order in the bottom of the eighth to get his fourth win. Merrell suffered his first loss in three decisions.
Matt Zoltak turned in perhaps his best outing of the season in relief of starter Daniel Tillman. Zoltak worked 4.1 innings and gave up just two hits and one earned run. Tillman struggled with his control, walking six in just two innings.
Robbie Shields had a pair of hits in each game to extend his current hitting streak to 13 straight games.
The Moccasins wrap up the regular season on the road with a three-game series Thursday and Friday at Nova Southeastern. They'll play a single game Thursday night at 7 p.m. and a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
Next Sunday the NCAA will announce its selections for the Division II Tournament.
