Outfielder Will Cherry became the third member of the 2009 Moccasin squad to be selected in the Major League Draft, as he was picked in the 38th round by the New York Mets Thursday.
Teammates Robbie Shields (Mets-third round) and Nick Stanley (Astros-25th round) were drafted earlier.
Cherry had an outstanding senior year cut short by a season-ending knee injury he suffered April 18 in a game at Lynn. At the time he was injured, he was batting .370 with 15 home runs and 43 RBI. His 15 home runs were one short of matching the FSC single-season record. Despite missing the last 14 games of the season, his batting average and home run total still led the team and he was a first-team All-Sunshine State Conference selection.
Cherry played in 188 games in his four-year FSC career and started 180 of them. His career batting average was .350 with 27 home runs and 142 RBI. He is tied for fifth in career doubles with 49 and tied for seventh in career home runs with 27.
