Thanks to a four-game win streak, the Florida Southern baseball team has jumped to number four in the Division II South Region Rankings released today by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
The Moccasins, off to a 6-2 start after splitting their first four games, received 60 points in the poll. Florida Southern received five votes in the NCBWA preseason poll.
Florida Southern swept Claflin over the weekend and has now won four straight. In the Claflin series, the Moccasins outscored the Panthers, 45-11, including a 17-0 shutout in game two of the series. Last weekend, the Moccasins took two of three from West Florida.
The Moccasins are batting .327 on the season with seven homers – five coming in the Claflin series at Henley Field. The team as scored 64 runs and has had 30 extra base hits so far. The pitching staff has a 4.43 staff ERA with 57 strikeouts in 67 innings.
Individually, Jason Sierra leads the Moccasins with a .414 average while knocking in seven runs. Logan Browning is also above .400 on the year with a .406 mark and a team-leading two homers. Dominic Brugnoni is at .393, followed by Sam Machonis at .375 and Mitch Reeves at .370. Machonis has driven in a team-best nine runs while Browning is next with eight RBI.
On the mound, Browning is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA after picking up his first win with six shutout innings of two-hit ball on Saturday. Ben Richardson is 2-0 on the season with a 3.44 ERA and a team-high 15 strikeouts.
Florida Southern travels to 11th-ranked Mount Olive College for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
Topping the South Region poll is the University of Tampa (8-1) with 100 points.
