Florida Southern slid up one spot to number eight in the Collegiate Baseball Magazine Division II National Top 30 poll. It is the highest national ranking for the Moccasins in the publication's weekly poll since being tapped number seven in the May 3, 2010 poll.
The Moccasins, 20-7, received 360 points in the poll to jump up from last week's number nine ranking. Florida Southern sits just behind the University of Tampa which drops to seventh from #2 with 280 points and a 22-6 record after a pair of losses at Embry-Riddle.
St. Cloud State, with a 15-0 record, repeats as the national's top-ranked team, receiving 472 points, while Millersville (23-2) is ranked second with a 23-2 mark. Rounding out the top five are Franklin Pierce (20-2, 454 pts.), Colorado Mesa (25-4, 432 pts.), and West Alabama (26-5, 416 pts.).
South Carolina-Aiken (25-6) comes in at number six and will play host to the Moccasins for a three-game series on April 15-17. Florida Tech (19-11), which is listed as receiving votes, is the only other Sunshine State Conference tea listed in the poll.
Florida Southern swept Eckerd over the weekend and has now won four in a row and boasts a 12-1 record in the month of March.
The Moccasins are hitting .333 as a team and has slugged 34 home runs with five round-trippers coming in the team's last game at Eckerd. Sam Machonis leads Florida Southern with a .415 average, a .712 slugging percentage, 49 hits, eight homers, and 33 runs batted in. He is also tied for the team lead with Mitch Reeves with 32 runs scored. Ben Richardson has a 7-1 record for the Moccasins and is second in the NCAA Division II in victories.
Florida Southern will host Palm Beach Atlantic this Friday at 6 p.m. and again on Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Henley Field.
