AIKEN, SC – Nile Goings hit a three-run home run to cap a four-run eighth inning as 13th-ranked South Carolina-Aiken came from behind to hand #9 Florida Southern a 4-2 loss here Saturday at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
Florida Southern (25-11) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Logan Browning reached on a infield error to lead off the frame and then scored on a single to right field by Sam Machonis. Browning scored the only other Moccasin run in the sixth as the sophomore rightfielder tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Reeves.
Meanwhile, Moccasins starting pitcher Cameon Hanes was keeping the Pacers off the scoreboard, scattering four hits over five shutout innings with four strikeouts.
USC-Aiken had runners on second and third with two outs in the first, but Hanes got Brian Parreira to fly out to end the threat. The Pacers again had a pair of runners on first and second in the second inning with one out, but again Hanes got a flyout and an infield grounder to silence the rally.
Brady Arenson (2-2) came in to start the sixth inning for Florida Southern and allowed just two baserunners over the sixth and seventh before running into trouble in the eighth as he walked the first two batters before allowing a RBI-single to Zach Moon. One out later, Arenson left with runners on first and second. Craig Savage entered the game for the Mocs and was greeted by a three-run homer off the bat of Goings that gave the host Pacers a 4-2 lead.
In the ninth, Machonis drew a lead-off walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the Pacer catcher. With one out, Jason Sierra lifted a fly ball to rightfield for the second out with Machonis getting thrown out at home to end the game.
Machonis finished with two of the Moccasins' four hits while Browning's triple and a Pablo Cabrera single in the fifth inning accounted for the other two.
Florida Southern will play USC-Aiken again Sunday at 1 p.m. and will try to avoid being swept as the Pacers also took Friday's game by a 4-0 score.
