NCBWA Names Machonis to its Honorable Mention All-America Team

AUSTIN, TX - Senior centerfielder Sam Machonis has been named an All-America Honorable Mention honoree as announced today by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). 

Machonis has been named to three All-South Region teams, earning first-team honors on the NCBWA, the Division II Conference Commissioners Association, and the American Baseball Coaches of America/Rawlings teams. He was also named to the first-team on the All-Sunshine Conference squad.

A 2014 graduate of Polk State College, Machonis led the Moccasins in 10 offensive categories, including batting average (.388), runs scored (59), hits (80), homers (13), RBI (52), total bases (136), slugging percentage (.660), on-base percentage (.471) and stolen bases (21). Defensively, he was charged with just one error in 112 total chances for a .991 fielding percentage. His 80 base hits is second most in the SSC while his 13 homers and 59 runs scored were fifth most. Machonis also ranked third with 21 stolen bases and fourth with 136 total bases. On the season, Machonis had 24 multi-hit games and 15 games with two or more RBI.

Machonis, a native of Tampa, was one of 23 players named to the Honorable Mention squad. Forty-three others were named to the first, second, or third teams. He was also one of six players from the Sunshine State Conference to be named an All-American joining first-teamers John Silviano (C) from Lynn and Brandon Gomez (DH) from Nova Southeastern; second-teamer Alexander DeGotti (SS) from Barry; third-teamer Devin Raftery (RP) from Nova Southeastern; and fellow honorable mention honoree and outfielder Ryan Baldwin of Barry. 

Alex Wojciechowski of Minnesota Duluth was named the NCBWA National Player of the Year after batting .442 with 86 runs scored, 33 home runs (three shy of the NCAA Division II record) and 101 runs batted in. Placido Torres of Tusculum was named the Pitcher of the Year after posting a perfect 11-0 record with a 0.70 ERA and 162 strikeouts in 116.0 innings.
