MELBOURNE, FL - J.J. Niekro has been named the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week as announced today by the league office. This is the first weekly award for Niekro who becomes the second Moccasin to be so-selected this season joining Logan Browning who was the Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 19.
Niekro, from Plant City, FL, started on the mound for the Moccasins on March 6 at Mount Olive. The sophomore righthander struck out seven and walked just two in a 6.0 inning shutout while allowing just a pair of singles. The game was called with no score and Florida Southern batting in the top of the seventh due to an injury suffered by the home plate umpire on a foul tip in the fifth inning. The 0-0 tie is the first ever scoreless game in Moccasin history and is just the seventh Florida Southern tie score game in 2,897 games played since 1957.
Niekro is 3-0 on the season with a 3.00 earned run average and has struck out 26 strikeouts in 30.0 innings. For his career, his is 5-1 with a 3.49 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 56.2 innings.
Florida Southern will take a 17-2-1 record into tomorrow night's 6:00 game at Flagler College in St. Augustine.
