DALLAS, TX - Senior reliever J.T. Hintzen has been named the South Region Pitcher of the Week as selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Hintzen picked up two wins in relief during the Moccasins' weekend sweep of Rollins College. The senior right-hander entered last Friday's game to start the sixth inning with the scored tied, 6-6, and struck out nine, walked one, and limited the Tars to two hits in four shutout innings as the Mocs' grabbed a 10-6 win with a four-run top of the ninth in the series opener.
The Old Greenwich, CT native took the hill in relief again on Sunday, once again coming in to start the sixth inning, this time with the Moccasins trailing, 2-0. He worked three innings with four more strikeouts and held Rollins to one run on one hit as Florida Southern scored four runs in the top of the ninth for a 5-3 win.
For the two games, Hintzen recorded 13 strikeouts and walked one in 7.0 innings while holding the Tars to one run on three hits. On the season, Hintzen is a perfect 8-0 – all eight victories coming in a relief role – with a 2.11 earned run average. He has struck out 72 and walked just 11 in 47.0 innings. For his career, he is 9-0 with a 2.29 ERA and has 125 strikeouts in 78.2 innings with a mere 20 walks.
Hintzen is the first Moccasin pitcher to be recognized as the South Region Pitcher of the Week since Ben Richardson was so honored on April 15, 2016.
Florida Southern, which has now won seven in a row, sports a 29-4-1 overall record and is 12-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Moccasins will host Florida Tech this Friday through Sunday at Henley Field. Game one is slated for 1 p.m. on Friday with a second game scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday. The series finale is Sunday at 1 p.m.
