Whitfield Named Reserve High Point Rider at UF Show

GAINESVILLE - Junior Shona Whitfield was named the reserve high point rider at the University of Florida IHSA Hunter Seat Show on Saturday, becoming the first-ever Florida Southern equestrian team member to be so honored. The Moccasin team placed sixth out of 15 teams in the show.

Whitfield finished tied with Lillian Hilgers from Savannah College of Art & Design for high points among all riders in the competition but lost out on a tiebreaker as Hilgers was named the High Point Rider.

Four Moccasins who qualified for finals based on their point totals advance to Sunday finals competition. Riding for Florida Southern were Sophie Morgan, Emily Shoaff, Paige Tynan, and Whitfield. Shoaff placed second out of 18 riders in the novice over fences while Whitfield took second out of 21 riders in the advanced walk/trot/canter event. Both riders now advance to the Zone Finals April 7-8 at Savannah Art & Design. Tynan finished in fifth place out of 21 riders in the advanced walk/trot/canter, but only the top two finishers in an event move on to nationals.
 
"We had a great weekend showing this weekend," said Moccasin coach Shannon Morrell. "This is a huge accomplishment for us and we are so excited to represent Florida Southern at Zones."

The University of Florida took championship honors with 42 points while SCAD was reserve champions with 33 points. Central Florida was third with 33 points, followed by North Florida (29 pts.), Rollins (25 pts.), and Florida Southern (24 pts.).
