KANSAS CITY, MO - After picking up two season-defining wins last week, Florida Southern College men's basketball has been named as the NABC Division II National Team of the Week, the National Association of Basketball Coaches announced on Tuesday.
The Moccasins earned a pair of thrilling overtime victories against two of the top three teams in the Sunshine State Conference last week. The Mocs knocked off Eckerd, 100-94, on Wednesday before topping No. 25 Barry, 109-100, on Saturday evening. Florida Southern improved to 4-1 this season against ranked opponents, and currently fifth in the SSC standings with a chance to secure a first-round home game in next month's conference tournament.
FSC has already won three more games than it did all of last year and is ranked among the top 50 nationally in 10 different statistical categories, including 12th in scoring offense (88.9 ppg) and 20th in both total steals (191) and turnovers forced (16.74/g). The Mocs also swept the SSC Player of the Week categories on Monday as Jonathan Lawton (Player of the Week) and Slinky Jones (Defensive Player of the Week) earned the conference awards.
Florida Southern heads to Rollins tomorrow for a pivotal SSC matchup. The Tars are tied with Eckerd at the top if the SSC standings and a win by the Mocs would put them squarely in contention for a regular-season conference title.
