Moccasins to Face Morehouse in South Regional

ATLANTA - Florida Southern College men's basketball will begin its 30th NCAA Tournament appearance with a first-round matchup against No. 10 Morehouse in the NCAA South Regional at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Forbes Arena. The Moccasins (20-10) are the No. 8 seed in the South Region, while the Fighting Maroon Tigers (25-2) are the No. 1 seed and South Region host. Florida Southern finished third in both the Sunshine State Conference regular-season standings and conference tournament, while Morehouse was the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) regular-season champion, but fell to Claflin in the semifinals of the SIAC Tournament.

The Mocs are making their 30th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and their first since winning the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2015. Florida Southern and Morehouse have never faced each other in the postseason, and have not met on the hardwood since 2012. The winner will advance to face either Eckerd or Valdosta State in the semifinal round at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. The South Region title game is slated for 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening, with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, SD.

» MOCCASIN STORYLINES

• Florida Southern enters the NCAA South Regional as the No. 8 seed after finishing third in both the Sunshine State Conference regular-season standings and conference tournament.

•  The Moccasins boast one of the top back courts in the South Region in all-SSC honorees Jonathan Lawton and Brett Hanson. The duo has combined to score 40.2 points per game, and is responsible for 45.4 percent of Florida Southern's scoring this year.

• While Lawton and Hanson have been FSC's primary scoring threats, they've also been extremely efficient with the ball. Hanson leads the Mocs with 116 assists, while Lawton has tallied 95. The pair has turned the ball over just 140 times all year, giving the duo an assist/turnover ratio of 1.51.

• The Moccasins are making their 30th NCAA Tournament appearance. Florida Southern won national titles in 1982 and 2015, has won 10 South Region championships, and is 44-30 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

• The Mocs are 30-22 overall in regional play, including a 12-17 record in first-round games. History is on Florida Southern's side should it advance, as the Moccasins are 11-1 in regional semifinals and 10-1 in regional title games.

• Florida Southern has made one of the more impressive turnarounds in the country this year, winning a total of nine more games than it did a season ago. The Mocs are 8-2 in their last 10 games and have scored at least 100 points in nine different contests this year. The school record for 100-point games in a single season is 10, set during the 1971-72 season.
