MELBOURNE, FL - After helping lead Florida Southern College men's basketball to a pair of victories on opening weekend, junior guard Brett Hanson has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Hanson helped lead the No. 22 Moccasins to wins over West Alabama (76-68) and Delta State (79-74) by tallying nine steals and 13 rebounds (nine defensive) over the weekend.
Hanson had four steals and seven boards against UWA to go along with five steals and six rebounds against Delta State. The five steals against DSU marked a career-high for Hanson, who helped the Mocs force a total of 34 turnovers in just two games. In all, the Moccasins outscored their two opponents 37-20 off turnovers. Hanson also chipped in offensively with nine points in the season-opening win over West Alabama and 15 in the victory against Delta State.
The award is the second SSC Defensive Player of the Week honor of Hanson's career, and his fourth weekly award overall. He earned both a Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week nod as a sophomore and was the conference's Player of the Week one time as a freshman.
Hanson and the Mocs will head to Southern New Hampshire on Saturday for their first regular-season road contest of the season. The game will serve as a homecoming of sorts for Hanson, who is originally from Manchester, NH, where SNHU is located.
