MELBOURNE, FL - For the second time in two weeks a Florida Southern College men's basketball student-athlete has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Slinky Jones earned the award for the fourth time in his career after a 13-point, 14-rebound performance in Saturday's win over Southern New Hampshire.
Jones tallied a double-double in the second half along by scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 boards over the final 20 minutes of action. He also tallied three blocks and two steals in helping the Mocs overcome a 33-29 halftime deficit to remain a perfect 3-0 on the year.
His award comes one week after teammate Brett Hanson was named the SSC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts on opening weekend. In two seasons at Florida Southern, Jones has tallied 62 blocks and 150 defensive rebounds.
Florida Southern returns to action this weekend when it faces Merrimack (Nov. 23) and Stonehill (Nov. 24) for the Terrace Hotel Thanksgiving Classic. Saint Leo will also participate in the event, facing Stonehill on Friday and Merrimack on Saturday.
