WILSON, N.C. - One day after the Lady Mocs earned their trip to the NCAA Division II Championship, the Moccasins did the same with a third place finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional here Wednesday at Wilson Country Club.
The Sunshine State Conference claimed the top four places in the Super Regional, with Barry edging Lynn by one stroke for first place, 845-846. The Moccasins were third with an 854. Nova Southeastern was fourth at 858. Queens (N.C.) captured the fifth qualifying spot with a fifth-place finish at 859.
In fourth place starting the final round, the Moccasins moved up one spot behind the play of Peter Creighton, Shelton Smith and Danny Evelyn, who combined to shoot three-under-par over the last six holes to help keep the Moccasins in front of Nova Southeastern.
Creighton had FSC's best round of the day with a one-under-par 70, his second straight, that allowed him to finish at 213 in a tie for 14th. Jude Eustaquio, with a 74 in the final round, also finished at 213. Evelyn shot a one-over-par 72 in the final round and finished at 216 in a tie for 25th. Matt Stauch shot a 75 and matched Evelyn's 216 for the tournament. Smith had a second straight round of even-par 71 and came in at 217 in a tie for 33rd.
Ben Lasso of Queens was the individual winner with a 205. The two individual qualifiers for the Division II Championship were Daniel Claytor of Barton and J.P. Albuquerque of Saint Leo, who tied for second at 208.
The NCAA Division II Championship will be played May 18-21 at Noblesville, Ind. The Moccasins last qualified as a team in 2008, when they finished sixth. They have won 11 men's golf titles, more than any other Division II school.
