Tied for 15th out of 108 golfers at the NCAA Division II National Finals with a four-over par 214 (74-70-70)… Won all three of his individual matches during the match play portion of the tournament… Shot a 72 (+2) in the quarterfinals vs. Ferris State, a 65 (-5) in the semifinals vs. West Florida, and a 71 (+1) in the championship match vs. Lynn… 65 was the best round by any Moccasin during match play and tied John Coultas for the best round by a Moccasin in the national tournament… In addition to his 15th-place finish at nationals and first-place finish at regionals, finished second at the conference tournament with a six-under par 210 (70-72-68), which gave him a total postseason score of -19 covering 12 rounds.
AS A SOPHOMORE (2015-16)… PING/GCAA Second Team All-American… PING/GCAA All-Region Team; Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference… NCAA Division II Academic Achievement Award winner… SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll… Played in all 11 tournaments, one of three Moccasins to do so (John Coultas and Jimmy Jones were the others)… Florida Southern’s top golfer at the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Georgia College and was their #2 golfer in five other tournaments… Also Florida Southern’s top golfer during the match play portion of the NCAA Division II National Finals, playing those two rounds at six-under par and winning both of his individual matches… Second on the team with a 72.14 stroke average… Tied for 17th in the Golfstat Division II national rankings with that average and was also tied for 17th with 116 birdies, an average of 3.4 per round… Tied for the Mocs’ second best individual round of the season with a career-low five-under par 67 in the quarterfinal round of match play at the National Finals (May 18)… Had three 68’s during the season as well, including one in the first round of stroke play at Nationals (May 17)… Had 12 rounds under par throughout the season, second to John Coultas’ 17… Tournament runner-up at the Bobcat Invitational with a three-over par 213 (69-70-74=213) in a 90-player field (March 21-22)… Had another top-five finish at the Cougar Invitational hosted by Columbus State (September 21-22)… Had five top-10 finishes and was out of the top-20 only once all year when he tied for 22nd out of 123 golfers at the McDonough Cup at Rio Pinar (October 26-27)… Still shot one-under par 215 for that tournament… Best tournament score came at the National Finals when he was five-under in stroke play (May 17-19)… Tied for eighth at the Sunshine State Conference Championships with a +9 (77-74-74=223) played at Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne… Tied for 19th out of 108 golfers at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regionals with a +4 (75-71-74=220)… Finished the stroke play portion of the National Tournament tied for 12th out of 108 golfers with a -5 (68-73-70=211)… Had rounds of 67 and 71 during match play at the National Finals.
AS A FRESHMAN (2014-15)… PING/GCAA First Team All-American… Finalist for Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award… PING/GCAA All-Freshman Team… PING/GCAA All-South Region… SSC Tournament Individual medalist… SSC All-Tournament Team… All-SSC Second-Team… SSC Freshman-of-the-Year… SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll… Played in all 12 events as a freshman… Top finish was winning medalist honors at both the SSC Championships (4/12-14/15) and at the McDonough Cup (10/27-28/14)… At the SSC Championships, shot a 207 (-9) to win by three shots over Moccasin teammate John Coultas at the RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, and fired a 210 (-6) at Rio Pinar to take home first place honors at the McDonough Cup… Was the first Moccasin to win medalist honors at the SSC Championships since Steve Paramore took home first place honors in 2003… Finished season with three top-5 finishes, two top-10 placements and two other top-20 finishes… Recorded 15 rounds of par or better on the year, including a season-low round of 67 on four separate occasions as he shot a 67 in the first round of the Matlock Collegiate Classic (2/9/15), the first round of the SSC Championships (4/12/15) and the third round at both the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional (5/6/15) Division II National Championships (5/20/15)… Was the team's No. 2 finishers at four tournaments… Halved his match against Lynn's Jose Andres Miranda in the match play portion of the NCAA National Championships (5/21/15)… Finished tied for fourth at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional (5/4-6/15) as he shot a 212 (-4) at Lake Jovita… Tied for 33rd in the stroke play portion of the NCAA Division II National Championships (5/18-20/15) as he shot a 223 for 54 holes at Rock Barn Golf & Spa… Opened his collegiate career with a 19th place finish at the Saint Leo Invitational (9/22-23/14) with a 2-under par 142 for 36 holes.
HIGH SCHOOL… 2014 graduate of Pomperaug High School in Southbury, Connecticut… Was a four-year letterman in golf at PHS… As a senior, was named the Connecticut Division II High School Player of the Year… Also earned First-Team All-Conference honors and served as the team's captain… Helped lead PHS to a Division I State Championship as a junior… Earned First-Team All-Conference and was the captain of the All-State Team… Was named a First-Team All-Conference and All-State selection as a sophomore… As a freshman was selected as a First-Team All-Conference honoree.
PERSONAL… Son of Maria and John VanDerLaan… Younger brother Michael (20) is a junior on the Moccasin men’s golf team this year… Also has a sister, Julia (15)… Won the New England Amateur Championship in 2014 and was also the Connecticut Amateur Champion in 2012… In the summer of 2015, competed in the Western Amateur Championship, was seventh at the Monroe Tournament, 19th at the Porter Cup Championships and seventh at the Ike Championships.
