First Regular Season Poll of the Season Has Florida Southern Men's Golf Team No. 3

NORMAN, OK – In the first regular season poll of the 2017-18 season, the Florida Southern men's golf team is ranked No. 3 in the country, sitting behind only West Florida and Lynn. The Moccasins remained well ahead of Barry and Nova Southeastern, which rounded out the top-five in the September 29 edition of the poll.

So far this fall, Florida Southern has played in only one tournament, taking fourth at the Griffin Invitational hosted by Saint Leo at Streamsong Resort on September 18 and 19. The Moccasins were one of seven teams in that tournament that were ranked 16th or higher in the GCAA Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll, and they turned in an even-par score of 864. They also got individual top-20 finishes from senior John Coultas (tied for fourth), senior John VanDerLaan (tied for 18th) and junior Michael VanDerLaan (tied for 18th), all of whom were one-under par or better.

West Florida won the Griffin Invitational with a school-record 831, and that was enough to move them up from No. 2 in the preseason poll into the top position where the Argonauts received all 17 first-place votes. Lynn was second in the tournament and is now No. 2 in the national poll as well, after starting the year at No. 4. Florida Southern dropped two spots to No. 3, and Barry fell one spot to No. 4, with a gap of 52 points separating the Moccasins and Buccaneers. (The Bucs have not yet played this season due to Hurricane Irma.) Nova Southeastern climbed six spots to No. 5 after finishing just one shot behind Florida Southern at Streamsong.

The run of schools from the Sunshine State Conference continued at No. 6 where Florida Tech now stands after a seventh-place showing at the Griffin Invitational. Limestone (SC), which was unranked in the GCAA preseason poll is now No. 7 after the Saints finished third at the Griffin Invitational. Newberry (SC) and South Carolina-Aiken are No. 8 and No. 9 respectively, and Saint Leo and Columbus State tied for No. 10.

One other SSC member is in the poll, with Rollins checking in at No. 25.

Florida Southern will play in three tournaments in October, including two before the next national poll is released on October 20. Up next for the Moccasins will be the GolfRank Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern at PGA National, October 9-10.
