MELBOURNE, FL – John VanDerLaan has added another Sunshine State Conference Player-of-the-Week award to his collection as the senior from Southbury, Connecticut earned that honor for the fifth time this season and the seventh time in his career. This occasion comes following another playoff win at The Battle at the Shores hosted by Barry University, in which VanDerLaan and fellow senior All-American John Coultas led Florida Southern to a one-shot win over Lynn.
With a tournament-best 17 birdies, VanDerLaan had rounds of 66, 66, and 73 to finish tied with Coultas for first place individually at eight-under-par 205. That combination was enough to give 2nd-ranked Florida Southern its fourth team title of the season, but sent the two Moccasins to a playoff for medalist honors. It was the third consecutive playoff for VanDerLaan, who had previously won the Bobcat Invitational in that manner on March 20. VanDerLaan won this one as well with an eagle on the first hole, giving him his fifth individual trophy of the season, and his seventh straight top-five finish. That's the longest such streak since Jeff Klauk had eight in a row to end his career in 2000.
The five wins this year leave VanDerLaan one shy of Klauk's school record from the 1999-2000 season. He is also one behind Klauk's career total of 10. His season stroke average of 69.30 would be the lowest in team history, almost a full stroke lower than the record he set as a junior.
The Moccasins have completed their regular season schedule and will begin the postseason April 22-24 at the Sunshine State Conference Championships, hosted this year by Nova Southeastern at Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie.
