VanDerLaan Named 2019 Men's Golf MVP

LAKELAND, Fla. - Beginning Monday, July 1, Florida Southern College Athletics will release its list of team MVPs for the 2018-19 season. Each MVP was selected by the team's head coach, and the list includes some of the top student-athletes in the country. MVPs will be revealed each weekday during the month of July at 10 a.m., and a list of their scheduled release dates can be found below.

The first MVP on the list is Michael VanDerLaan of the Moccasin men's golf team. In May, VanDerLaan became the 10th student-athlete in the history of the men's golf program to win an individual national title. VanDerLaan, who entered the NCAA Division II National Championships without a collegiate win on his resume, stunned the field by shooting a -9, including a 6-under 66 on the final day, to capture the individual title just one year after his older brother, John.

Florida Southern has won more team (13) and individual (10) national titles in men's golf than any other NCAA Division II program and research indicates that the VanDerLaan brothers are the only set of siblings to each win an individual men's golf championship, accomplishing the feat in back-to-back years.
