LAKELAND, FL - Florida Southern College men's lacrosse will open the 2018 season with a pair of road games this weekend as the Moccasins travel to the Tar Heel State with matchups at Belmont Abbey (Feb. 23) and Catawba (Feb. 25). The Mocs will face Belmont Abbey at 3 p.m. tomorrow and take on Catawba at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
Florida Southern, which was selected to finish second in the Sunshine State Conference in the SSC preseason coaches poll, returns many of its key players from a year ago. Back in the fold this year are Austen Lison, who was a USILA third team all-American last year, as well as 2017 all-conference selections Jeff Phelps (honorable mention), Kevin Dyer (all-freshman), and Adam Utter (all-freshman).
The Mocs are coming off a 7-8 season a year ago and nearly knocked off SSC favorite Tampa in the first round of last year's conference tournament. Florida Southern is among six Sunshine State Conference teams that are ranked in the top 20 or receiving votes in the current USILA Coaches Poll. The Moccasins have never opened the regular season this late in the year.
Florida Southern will play its first home game at the brand-new Moccasin Field at the Barnett Athletic Complex on March 4 against Emmanuel. It will mark just the second lacrosse game to ever be played on campus, and the first-ever men's game to be held on campus.
