MELBOURNE, Fla. - After finishing first in three individual events and earning first in a pair of relay events, Florida Southern College men's swimming junior Matias Lopez has been named as the Sunshine State Conference men's Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Lopez, who won the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.89), 200-yard individual medley (1:51.89), and the 400-yard individual medley (3:57.82), also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:32.97). His times in the 200-yard backstroke, 400-yard individual medley, and 500-yard freestyle qualified as NCAA provisional marks.
He also was part of the Mocs' first-place teams in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays, swimming the anchor leg in the 400. Lopez also was on the second-place 400 and 800-yard medley relay teams for the Moccasins, who won the Panther Invite at Florida Tech by more than 100 points.
Lopez is now a three-time SSC Men's Swimmer of the Week honoree, having previously captured the award once as a freshman and once as a sophomore. His mark in the 200-yard backstroke is the seventh-fastest at the Division II level this year, while his mark in the 400-yard individual medley is good for ninth nationally.
Florida Southern is off for nearly a month before it takes part in the Spartan Invite in Clearwater from Dec. 16-19.
