LAKELAND – Florida Southern closed out the 2016 Sunshine State Conference regular season with an 8-1 victory over visiting Eckerd College here Saturday at the Warden Tennis Center. The 43rd-ranked Moccasins complete the SSC season with a 3-3 record while improving to 14-8 overall. Eckerd drops to 12-9 and 0-6 in the conference.
The Moccasins held off Eckerd at number one and two doubles to sweep all three matches. Arthur Viallaneix and Derek Bell picked up an 8-3 win at number three doubles to get the Moccasins rolling. FSC's Oscar Soderlund and Miguel Alavarez-Hevia defeated EC's James McManus and Eddie Lewis at number two by an 8-6 score while the Moccasin duo of Jose de Sario and Brian Slivonik posted the identical score in their win at number one over Victor Appelqvist and Yosua Husodo.
In singles, de Sario notched FSC's first tally with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Appelqvist at number one while Alvarez-Hevia clinched the match with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, decision at number three over Husodo.
Slivonik then downed Lewis, 7-5, 6-1 at number two singles while Viallaneix recorded a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 battle over McManus at number four. Springfield picked up Eckerd's only point in the match with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win at number five singles over Soderlund while Matt Mastuyama held off Jonathan Cheng, 6-7 (7-10), 6-0, 13-11 at number six in the final match of the day.
Florida Southern wraps up its regular season at home on Monday against Embry-Riddle at 2 p.m. at the Warden Tennis Center. The Moccasins will then compete in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, April 28-30, at the University of Tampa.
