ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Miguel Alvarez-Hevia posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alasdair Knox at number five singles to clinch Florida Southern's first win of the season the Moccasins defeated Eckerd, 6-3, in Sunshine State Conference men's tennis action here Monday at the Bullard Courts.
The Moccasins (1-3 overall and 1-0 in the SSC) took a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping the doubles competition. Brian Slivonik and Fabian Lundberg grabbed FSC's first point with an 8-5 win over Eckerd's Will Stone and Matt Spasic at number two. Jose de Sario and Lennart Vossgäetter then took an 8-5 victory at number three over Bruno Alves and Eddie Lewis while Laurent Mailloux and Alvarez-Hevia completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at number one matched against Victor Appelqvist.
Mailloux put the Moccasins within one point of the win with his 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Spasic at number four singles. Alvarez then recorded his win at number five to clinch the win for Florida Southern. Eckerd (0-3 overall and 0-2 in the SSC) got on the scoreboard as Appelqvist defeat Lundberg, 6-4, 6-3 at number one singles and Lewis topped de Sario, 0-6, 6-3, 10-2 at number two.
Slivonik got Florida Southern's final point with a 6-2, 6-3 win at number three singles over Stone. In the day's last match, Eckerd's Alves downed FSC's Matt Matsuyama, 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.
The Moccasins will host Lynn University this Saturday, March 4, at 10 a.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center on the FSC campus.
