LAKELAND - Florida Southern grabbed a 2-1 lead in doubles, but couldn't keep the momentum rolling in singles, eventually falling 5-4 to No. 8 Lynn here Saturday in a Sunshine State Conference match-up at the Lakeland City Courts. The 40th ranked Moccasins drop to 1-4 on the year and 1-1 in the SSC while Lynn improves to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Lynn's number three doubles team of Jean-Baptiste Mateo and Tristan Houle downed Florida Southern's Oscar Soderlund and Lennart Vossgäetter, 8-2, but the Moccasins came back to take the final two doubles matches.
FSC's Laurent Mailloux and Miguel Alvarez-Hevia defeated Lynn's Kay Bartmann and Jakub Jiricka, 8-5, at number one doubles while Fabian Lundberg and Brian Slivonik topped Florian Clemares and Jose Porfirio, 9-7, at number three.
Lynn's Mateo, ranked 19th in the NCAA Division II, defeated Florida Southern's Lundberg, 6-1, 6-1, at number one while Porfirio topped Soderlund, 6-3, 6-1, at number six to give the Knights a 3-2 edge.
Bartmann, ranked 15th in Division II, then defeated de Sario, 6-4, 6-2, at number two singles for Lynn's fourth win in the match. In the decisive match, the Mailloux fell behind 6-3 after the first set at #4, but took a 4-2 lead in the second, before falling 6-4 as Houle clinched the win for the Knights.
The Moccasins grabbed the final two matches as Alvarez-Hevia won out, 6-7, 6-1 (10-2) over Jiricka at number five and Slivonik downed Clemares, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) at number three.
Florida Southern will have Sunday off before playing three straight home matches in as many days as the Moccasins kick-off Spring Break. FSC takes on Walsh Monday at 10 a.m., Mercyhurst on Tuesday at 11 a.m., and Chestnut Hill on Wednesday at 10 a.m. All three matches will be played at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center on the FSC campus.
