LAKELAND, FL - The Florida Southern men's tennis opened its season with an 8-1 loss to 11th-ranked Flagler Thursday here at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center, spoiling the debut of new Moccasin head coach Greg Van Emburgh.
Flagler swept the three doubles matches to start the match and grab a 3-0 lead. The Saints' duo of Felipe Carvalho and Daniel Arrien posted an 8-3 win over Victor Ahlbeck and Oscar Soderlund at number three while Lukas Storck and Konstantin Dustmann downed Tim Becker and Blaine Miller at number one, 8-4. Hermann Gertmann and Luca Bolla completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory over Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Matt Matsuyama and number two.
In singles, Flagler continued its dominance winning the first five matches before Florida Southern's Alvaro Arias outlasted Hermann Gertman, 6-5, 7-6 (10-8) at number three for the Moccasins' lone win.
In the other singles matches, FSC's Miguel Alvarez-Hevia fell to 38th-ranked Storck, 6-0, 6-2, at number one, while Ahlbeck dropped a 6-1, 6-1 match to Bolla at number two and Becker was defeated 6-1, 7-5 to Dustmann at number four.
Lennart Vossgaetter was topped 6-2, 6-0 by Carvalho at number five and Matsuyama fell 6-1, 6-3 to Arrien.
Florida Southern travels to Division I Stetson on Saturday for a 5 p.m. match.
