LAKELAND – Florida Southern picked up its first conference win of the season in convincing style with a 9-0 victory over Eckerd at home on Thursday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The Moccasins, ranked 43rd in the ITA NCAA Division II National Rankings, are now 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference while the Tritons drop to 4-9 and 0-7.
Victor Ahlbeck and Blaine Miller gave Florida Southern its first point with an 8-0 win over Alejandro Vuconovic and Charlton Ogg at number three doubles while Derek Bell and Tim Becker won, 8-2, over Will Stone and Matt Spasic at number two. Miguel Alvarez-Hevia and Matt Matsuyama made is a clean sweep for the Moccasins with an 8-3 triumph over Alasdair Knox and Robert Vasquez at number one.
In singles, Ahlbeck defeated Spasic, 6-1, 6-3, at number three while 61st-ranked Alvaro Arias easily got by Knox 6-0, 6-1 at number one to give the match to Florida Southern.
Alvarez-Hevia continued the Moccasin winning ways with a 6-1, 6-0 tally to down Stone at number two and Becker breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 victory versus Vazquez at number four singles. Lennart Vossgaetter then defeated Vuconovic, 6-2, 6-1 at number five and Matsuyama beat Ogg, 6-3, 6-2 at number six.
Florida Southern will next host Florida Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
