GAINESVILLE – Freshman Dean McGregor posted an eighth-place time of 25:57.58 to lead the Moccasins to a third place finish among non-Division I schools in the 8K UF Mountain Dew Invitational in Florida Southern's season debut here Saturday at University of Florida's Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Florida Southern's top five runners combined for 108 points. Alabama-Huntsville won the non-Division group with 66 points followed by West Alabama at 76 points. Other Sunshine State Conference schools competing in the meet included Tampa (4th, 134 pts.); Saint Leo (7th, 172 pts); and Florida Tech (9th, 243 pts).
McGregor, who gave the Mocs six points with his finish, was the second highest finishing runner among runners from SSC schools, trailing only Tampa's Tyler Blackburn, who finished with a time of 25:49.89 to take sixth place.
Senior Jose Perez finished in 10th place for the Moccasins with a 26:09.11 to pick up eight points toward the team score. Senior Kyle Butler finished 12th with a time of 26:12.09 while Duke University transfer, junior Anthony Pollizzi, came in at 27:15.82 to finish in 46th place. Rounding Florida Southern's top five finishers was sophomore John Bryant who had a time of 27:27.98 to finish 59th. Bryant's time was a personal collegiate record by 8.04 seconds.
The UF Mountain Dew Invitational featured 29 schools, split into two groups of Division I (11 teams) and Non-Division I (18 teams).
Florida Southern will host its own Moccasin Invitational this Friday night at 5:15 p.m. at Lakeland's Holloway Park, which will also be the site of the 2015 SSC Championships on Oct. 24.
