NEW ORLEANS – Florida Southern College's men's cross country will start its 2019 campaign ranked third in the preseason South Region Poll, released Tuesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Moccasins finished third last November at the NCAA South Region Championships.
Lee, which finished second in the region last fall, claims the top spot as it return its squad's top ten from a year ago. Embry-Riddle, who was picked to win the Sunshine State Conference this season, has been picked to finish second in the South Region poll. The Gulf South's Alabama-Huntsville and Mississippi College round out the top five.
Saint Leo (6), Tampa (7), Lynn (8) and Nova Southeastern (10) also represented the Sunshine State Conference in the top ten.
The Moccasins are entering their second year under head coach Matt Levassiur whose first season was highlighted by a third-place finish at the NCAA South Region Championship last November. USTFCCCA All-Region selections Mason Jones and Josh Wagner, who finished fifth and 15th place, respectively, look to better their individual performances and return their squad back to the NCAA Division II National Championships this year.
The top three teams at the South Region Championships will gain an automatic qualifying spot in the NCAA Division II National Championship. This year's championship will be held on Nov. 23 in Sacramento, Calif.
