MELBOURNE, FL - Florida Southern's Kristen Beacham has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 9 following her three-hit shutout of 4th-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday. It's Beacham's first SSC weekly award of the season and the second of her career.
A sophomore from Bartow, Florida, Beacham went the distance against the Sailfish, ended PBA's school-record 23-game winning streak with her first complete game shutout of the season. She allowed just three hits (all singles), struck out four and walked two while matched up against the previously unbeaten Abbey Busby. The Sailfish, who were undefeated in conference play going into the game, put their first three hitters on base against Beacham in the top of the first inning, but she worked out of trouble with two force-outs at the plate and a strikeout. In each of the next two innings, the Sailfish had two on with one out, but Beacham kept them off the board in those innings as well.
Over the final four innings of the game, Beacham allowed just one base runner, a single by Magnolia West leading off the top of the fifth. She retired nine in a row after that in pitching the Moccasins to their first win over a top-five opponent since they beat #2 Alabama-Huntsville 6-5 in 2009. It also marked the third time since 2008 that Florida Southern has faced a team riding a 20-game winning streak or longer, and the Mocs have ended all three of them.
Beacham previously won the SSC Pitcher of the Week award last year after a 4-1, 10-inning win at Eckerd in which she allowed one run on four hits. Prior to this week, Florida Southern's most recent SSC Pitcher of the Week had been Brandi Jones following two wins over Tampa in the final series of last season. Shannon Bell was the SSC Player of the Week earlier this season in February.
The Moccasins will travel to Melbourne this weekend for a three-game series with Florida Tech on Friday at 3 p.m. (single game), and Saturday at 1 p.m. (doubleheader).
