MELBOURNE, FL – For the second time in her career, Florida Southern senior Jessica Trana has been voted First Team All-Sunshine State Conference, and freshman Celia Higgins also earned a spot on the All-SSC Team in a vote of league coaches. Trana was a first team selection at designated player as a freshman in 2016 and again this year, and Higgins was a second team pick at third base.
Trana, who was one of only two players to start every game for the Moccasins, hit .273 and was their leading run-producer with 23 RBI. She also led the Mocs with nine doubles, 10 extra-base hits, and 20 walks. Her .372 on-base percentage was second on the team, and her .333 average with runners in scoring position was the best. Among her season highlights were two RBI in a 3-1, extra-inning win at Tampa; a double, triple, and three RBI in a 5-4 win over Davenport; and a 7-hit series at Barry.
Trana finished her career tied for seventh on the school's career doubles list with 37. This year, she became just the second player in team history to lead the team, or tie for the lead, in RBI three times. Kellie Robinson was the first, doing that three years in a row from 1989-91.
Higgins made the All-SSC Team in her debut season after leading Florida Southern in batting average (.341), on-base percentage (.425), and slugging percentage (.495). Though she was limited to 29 games due to injury, Higgins still finished second on the team to Trana in extra-base hits (three doubles, four triples, and one home run) and RBI (14). In 21 conference games this year, Higgins hit .362, which was good for ninth in the league overall, and first among freshmen. Eight of her 10 multi-hit games also came in SSC play.
