WEST PALM BEACH - Several current and former members of the Florida Southern water ski team recently competed in the 73rd Annual GOODE Water Ski National Championships at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach. The event was held on Aug. 11-15.
In the Men's 1 Division, sophomore-to-be Cole McCormick (Dundee, Fla.) took home a national title in tricks with a score of 5,400 and was also the national champion overall skier in Division I as he scored a total of 3,280.6 points. In addition to winning the tricks competition, McCormick was third in the slalom (5.00 buoys at 38 feet off) and was third in the jumps (151 feet).
Along with McCormick, another Moccasin water skier won a national championship as women's junior-to-be skier Ellie Rae Horton (Moorpark, Calif.) took home the national title in the Division I women's jumps competition with a leap of 127 feet and was also the women's national champion overall skier in Division I as she scored a total of 3,591.4 points as she also placed ninth in the slalom (1.50 buoys at 35 feet off) and second in the tricks (5,010 points).
In the men's overall slalom competition, Moccasin senior-to-be K.C. Wilson (Winter Springs, Fla.) place ninth with 5.00 buoys at 38 feet off. Wilson won the NCSWA National titles in the slalom in both 2012 and 2013 and was eighth in the event at last year's NCWSA Nationals.
Moccasin senior-to-be Lauren Morgan (Odessa, Fla.) placed second in the Women's Overall jumping competition as she recorded a leap of 162 feet and was third in the slalom (3.00 buoys at 38 feet off).
In the Women's Division I competition, junior-to-be Lauren Harris (Nicholasville, Ky.) was sixth in the slalom (4.00 buoys at 35 feet off) and 10th in tricks (1,540 points), while junior-to-be Amy Rooker (Fenton, Mich.) was 14th in the slalom (4.00 buoys at 28 feet off) and former Moccasin and current assistant coach Jessica Dobbertin placed 19th in the slalom as she had 2.50 buoys at 23 feet long.
McCormick wasn't the only Moccasin men's skier competing in Men's Division I as senior-to-be Luke Lockwood (Jacksonville, Fla.) placed ninth in the slalom (5.00 buoys at 35 feet off) and sophomore-to-be David Fulp (Lexington, N.C.) placed 16th in the slalom (2.00 buoys at 35 feet off) and was sixth in the jumps with a leap of 123 feet.
The divisions were based on age groups, with no age limits for the Open Division for both the men and women.
