MELBOURNE, FL - After winning both the Sunshine State Conference regular-season and tournament titles a year ago, Florida Southern College women's basketball has been selected to repeat as SSC champions in the annual preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced on Wednesday. The Moccasins were a unanimous selection after earning 10-of-11 first-place votes (coaches could not vote for their own team) and 100 total points.
The Mocs bring back four starters from a squad that finished 25-5 last season, including a 17-3 mark in SSC play, and advanced to its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. In its fifth year under head coach Betsy Harris, the Mocs will be led by two of the best players in the South Region in Camille Giardina and Anja Fuchs-Robetin. Fuchs-Robetin is the reigning Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year and earned Honorable Mention all-America honors from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
Giardina, who led the SSC in scoring a season ago, was a first team all-SSC selection and also earned Honorable Mention all-America accolades. The duo combined to score 38.5 points per game in 2017-18 and held the Mocs lead the conference in scoring. Eckerd, with the only other first-place vote, was picked to finish second in the SSC. Tampa was picked third, while Embry-Riddle and Nova Southeastern tied for fourth. Barry, Rollins, Florida Tech, Saint Leo, Lynn, and Palm Beach Atlantic rounded out the poll.
The Moccasins open the season at the annual GSC/SSC Challenge in Saint Leo from Nov. 9-10. Florida Southern will face Lee in the season opener and wraps up the first weekend of play against Shorter. FSC's first home contest is on Nov. 19 against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez.
