Women's Hoops Opens Season on Friday

LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College women's basketball will open its 2019-20 campaign on Friday when it squares off with Alabama-Huntsville at the annual GSC/SSC Challenge at Streamline Sale Arena at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins will also face Lee on Saturday, with both games slated for a 2 p.m. tipoff. The weekend will also include games between Saint Leo/Lee (Friday | 12 p.m.) and Saint Leo/Alabama-Huntsville (Saturday | 12 p.m.).

The Mocs are coming off a 30-4 record a year ago, and advanced to the NCAA South Region Championship after winning the Sunshine State Conference regular-season and tournament titles for the second-straight year. This weekend's games are the first of four-straight home games to start the year, as Southern will also host Flagler (Nov. 13) and Bentley (Nov. 16) before opening SSC action on the road at Embry-Riddle (Nov. 20) and Barry (Nov. 23).

Moccasin head coach Betsy Harris, entering her sixth season at the helm of the program, will lead a talented but inexperienced squad that saw seven freshmen join the team in the offseason. Elsa Landberg and Katerina Pazzaglia-Khomenko are the team's lone seniors, while junior Julia Jenike and sophomore Mackenzie Steele will be relied on heavily to replace the production lost by the graduations of all-Americans Anja Fuchs-Robetin and Camille Giardina.

Florida Southern was picked to finish third in the SSC Preseason Coaches Poll, behind Tampa and Nova Southeastern. The Mocs are currently receiving votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Preseason Poll.

MOCCASIN STORYLINES

• Florida Southern opens the 2019-20 season with the annual GSC/SSC Challenge, where it will face Alabama-Huntsville and No. 14 Lee.

• The Moccasins have played in the GSC/SSC Challenge each of the past three seasons, and are 5-1 in those games. Southern's lone loss in the past three GSC/SSC Challenge events came against Lee on Nov. 11, 2017.

• Florida Southern is coming off yet another pair of Sunshine State Conference titles, winning both the SSC regular-season and tournament titles in 2018-19. The Mocs, who went 30-4 last season, advanced to the NCAA Division II South Region final last season before falling to Nova Southeastern.

• Alabama-Huntsville is coming off a 14-13 mark last year, which included a 12-8 mark in Gulf South Conference contests. The Chargers return four of their top five scorers from a year ago in Aryn Sanders (15.7 ppg), Holly Harris (11.4), Katie Speegle (8.9), and Emiline Payne (6.0).

• Although Moccasin head coach Betsy Harris (Alabama, 1995) and UAH head coach Andrea Lemmond (Samford, 1996) played collegiately in the same state at the same time, they did not face each other in college. Alabama and Samford did not square off on the hardwood until 1997.

• The Mocs will face Lee in their second home game on Saturday. The Flames enter the year ranked No. 14 in the country after finishing 25-7 last season and winning the GSC Tournament title.

• The Moccasins face a tall task in 2019-20 as they will have to replace a pair of all-Americans in Anja Fuchs-Robetin and Camille Giardina. The standout duo was responsible for 48.1 percent (1,261) of Florida Southern's 2,623 points. Fuchs-Robetin (8th) and Giardina (3rd) ended their careers ranked in the top 10 in school history in career scoring.
