MELBOURNE, FL - After scoring a game-high five goals in a 17-16 upset of No. 1 Adelphi on Saturday, Florida Southern College women's lacrosse junior Dani Bursinger has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the SSC announced on Monday.
Bursinger tallied seven total points in the Moccasins massive victory over the Panthers, scoring five goals and dishing out two assists. Her goal on a free-position shot with 27:01 to go in the first half marked the first-ever goal at the brand-new Moccasin Field at the Barnett Athletic Complex. She finished 4-of-5 on free-position shots and set a new career high with five goals. Bursinger also helped set the tone in the draw control circle, winning 10 draw controls for the Mocs, who 22-of-34 draw controls in the contest.
Florida Southern's offense put up the most goals by any Adelphi opponent since 2002 (C.W. Post - 17, 5/4/02), and snapped the Panthers nine-game regular-season winning streak while marking the first time since April 28, 2012 that Adelphi has lost a non-conference, regular-season contest (19 in a row). FSC's victory was Adelphi's first-ever loss in a season opener.
Bursinger's award is the first Offensive Player of the Week honor of her career. She was named as the SSC Defensive Player of the Week last season (3/13/17), while also earning IWLCA National Player of the Week honors (3/15/17), was a first-team all-SSC selection, a first-team all-South Region honoree, and a second-team IWLCA all-American.
She joins teammate Marina Jozokos (Defensive Player of the Week) as this week's women's lacrosse award winners. It is the 11th time in program history that the Moccasins have swept the weekly SSC women's lacrosse awards.
Next up for the Moccasins has them hosting a pair of games on March 3, Seton Hill (10 a.m.) and Tusculum (4 p.m.).
